Monument record FRK 042 - Chippenham Road (Neo)

Large Mes patinated assemblage of worked flints with some late Neo/EBA pieces, including re-worked Mes flints from whole east end of field (sites FRK 041 & 042 especially).

The fieldwalking of a field overlooking the flood plain of the Lee Brook resulted in the recovery of a remarkable prehistoric assemblage. The survey identified 360 worked flints and 95 prehistoric potsherds (mainly Iron Age). This is the largest amount of prehistoric pottery discovered in one fieldwalking episode on any field in Suffolk. The earliest, patinated, flint assemblage can be dated by a simple single barbed (oblique) arrowhead of the Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age. The later, unpatinated, assemblage, of slightly poorer quality, probably dates from between the beginning of the Middle Bronze Age and the end of the Iron Age.
