Full Description

August 1996: Parchmarks of a rectangular structure identified by owner in pasture field (last ploughed circa 1990). Planned by D Mizon, circa 23m by 14m, symmetrical, subdivided into 6 (rooms?) - see plans (S1-S3). Small section cut, by owner, across one internal E-W wall, shows ploughsoil over flint and mortar foundation (includes chalk), circa 60cm wide. Mortar(?) layer at top, dense small rubble and softish mortar then lower part of larger flints in yellow sand (loose mortar?). Circa 40cms (depth) excavated. Cut into brown, probably natural clay - suggests no surviving floor levels. Two further flinty areas were also noted by J Harding, sme 50m to the E, at circa TL 7257 4913 (see plan, 52).
Some tile (including 1 tegula) and pottery (including a stamped mortarium rim of SOLLVSF, Verulamium potter of late C1), found on farm field surfaces. Details in (S2).
