Full Description

Oct-Nov 1996: Evaluation by trenching of 26ha proposed quarry site. Located three distinct discreet sites, FSG 013-015 and a variety of other isolated(?) features and finds. Various periods - prehistoric pottery, material mainly LBA with some EIA (pers comm Matt Brudenell). Details in (S1)(S2).

At least three concentrations of features and a possible earthwork bank were idnetified all of which occurred on the higher ground across the middle and towards the south end of the devlopment area. The first area (recorded as FSG 013) was a concentration of Iron Age features, mostly pits, spread over an are of c.12000 sq.m. The second area (recorded as FSG 014) was located on the western side of the site and comprised pits, ditches and curving gullies of Iron Age date. The third area (recorded as FSG 015) was centred around an isolated cremation surrounded by a ring ditch of 4m in diameter. The possible bank could be seen as a shallow ridge running east-west across the site and was made-up of 0.60m of homogenous orang/brown silt. Very small fragments of Iron Age pottery were collected from sand layers underlying the bank. (S1)
