Full Description

Scatter of metalwork and pottery from the area on the W side of Rom fort (PKM 005) and may include the W defences. See Arttype for full list of artefacts.
1933: Roman mortarium found 1933, possibly C3, with fragmentary stamp, reported by R Rainbird Clarke, undated (S5).
1951: Basil Brown reports that in 1951, he and Major G Kilner found tiles, wall plaster and pink cement on the field S of The Cottage, then belonging to Bridge Farm (S3)(S4). Concentration of Rom tile and flints observed in ploughsoil at (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) in circa 1990 is probably the same building complex (S6).
1981: Complete enamelled brooch (Collingwood type Siii), and a Valentinian coin, found at (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s)(S1).
1986: Coins including C1 dupondius Claudian, denarius Hadrian (AD 117) and bronze C3-C4 (including Theodosius and Honorius) and enamelled plate brooches, trumpet brooch fragments, possible mirror fragment, plain rings, silver pin fragment found metal detecting. Also pottery including samian, mortarium and tile (S2).
1987-1991: Further metal detected metalwork - coins, brooches, seal box and lid [one discounted as seal box by Colin Andrews, April 2008] , nail cleaner, cast front of horse (possible bucket mount), finger ring with intaglio and bronze working evidence (sprue cap and possible unfinished Colchester derivative brooch (S6).
2002: The evidence from the monitoring of the trench has established with a high degree of accuracy the course of the Roman road towards the river crossing. Although the section is about 200m from the current course ofthe river it suggests the road or a ford crossed slightly to the west of the current bridge. The combination ofstratigraphic and finds evidence is consistent with a substantial high status building set back about 30m from the road frontage; they also point towards a building with a hypocaust. The extent of the building after this is difficult to gauge although the clay to the east indicates at least one room in that direction. Although only a small area was seen it should perhaps be compared with a hypocaust building identified on the road frontage approximately 100m to the south (S7).
1996 The construction of an access road was begun without compliance with the planning condition but was recorded by A Smith who swa Rom building material and a possible wall. Observation of the field north of 026 suggests relatively well-preserved deposits. Topsoil from the road strip was removed and stored at Hillgreen Farm Wattisfield (TL99997276) where it was metal detected by A Smith and numerous Rom objects recovered, including a copper alloy letter fragment, probably an 'S'.
Also IA coins, Sax wrist clasp, Med items.

1998: Monitoring carried out during the laying of electricity cables identified evidence of extensive roman settlement in the form of buried Roman occupations layers, pits and a chalk surface of a possible floor of a Roman building. This evidence was bisected by the road. Important information was recorded on the depth of the Roman Deposits and finds including two large fragments of quern stone (S8).
