Full Description

Evalution site lies within an area known as 'Great Sexton's Meadow' and within the floodplain of the River Linnet. Present course of Linnet appears to have been straightened. Raised ground level of meadows north of Friars Lane (pottery sherd C18 included in rubble and soil). Field at west end of water meadow, a double bank follows extended east-west line of Friars Lane suggesting causeway beneath continued to 'The Butts' (north end of Cullum Road). Extended line of bank forms substantial portion of an arc running between west and south gates. Gravelly clays beneath bank typical of riverine deposit, suggesting this could have been the river's original course (S1).See (S2) for more details.
