Full Description
June 2000: Trenched evaluation prior to housing development located extensive Med deposits. Details in (S1).
Jan-Feb 2001: Mainly Med activity largely post-dating the construction of the castle and including a complex of clay constructed ovens. The site had been sealed by significant depths of both topsoil and subsoil, both of which were rich in finds. In the northern part of the site, wide trenches were opened on the footprints of the buildings to be constructed. A number of post holes were excavating suggesting the presence of structures. Ditches were also observed, as well as a series of large, deep pits, a few of which appeared to be associated with some form of quarrying rather than the exclusive disposal of rubbish. To the south of the site, an area was stripped for full excavation and was found to contain a complex of clay constructed ovens as well as pits and post holes. Finds from all these features indicate activity on the site from the 12th century onwards (S2).
Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2001 (S3).
