Monument record BRD 156 - Middle Saxon to medieval activity at London Road, Brandon

Archaeological evaluation of three trenches uncovered evidence of Early Medieval settlement. Occupation levels had been truncated by post-medieval ploughing but the remains of at least 12 ditches were identified. Although they align broadly east to west the pattern suggests they predate the London road and may relate to the Late Saxon developments uncovered on the Sports Centre site. Finds were collected from three of the ditches and included a fragment of animal bone, a piece of fired clay/daub, and medieval coarseware. Some Early Medieval ware and Thetfor-type Ware were also present (S1).

Excavation uncovered further evidence of the Late Saxon settlment of Brandon. Features consisted mostly of ditches with the heaviest concentration in the north-west corner of the excavation. The quantity of finds recorded was low and together with the fearture distribution suggests the site may have been close to the southern edge of the settlement already identified to the north. The site may have reveretd to open fields during this period (S2).
