Monument record FRD 010 - Horsehair Manufactory

Large post mill with two-storey roundhouse. Originally built in 1760, the mill was raised and the roundhouse built in 1836. The mill ceased work in 1934, and was preserved by enthusiasts from 1966 to 1973. Two of the four patent sails remain, while the fantail is, at present (1978?) missing. There are two pairs of stones in the head (S1).
Listed as one of 16 best industrial sites in Suffolk.
Recorded in gazetteer of significant Industrial Archaeological sites extracted from a 1980 booklet entitled 'Industrial Archaeology in and around Norfolk' and revised as 'Suffolk IA Sites in 1980' in Suffolk Industrial Archaeological Society Newsletter in 2011 where it is described as: Windmill (TM 192597). Fine large post-mill, second tallest in the country at 48' high. Built 1760, raised and enlarged 1836. Restored, but not regularly worked. Occasionally open to public: may be viewed from B1077.
