Full Description
'A series of wooden branches, running parallel with, and pressed into grey clay exposed along the foreshore.. ..no more than 2m in width and extremely localised.. ..they look to be deliberately laid but show no evidence of being pegged down or held in place.. ..the site has only come to light during the summer of 2004, possibly having been exposed after erosion of the saltmarsh during the winter months'. The wood was sampled but due to a lack of funding, has not been studied yet. S1
Another study of wood scatters and structures was undertaken by Peter Murphy (Now English Heritage) on behalf of the Environment Agency in May 1998, probably in advance of the breech of the sea wall at TM 2563 3533. This identified seven different structures/areas of wood in all but none are accurately plotted so their exact position is unknown. It is likely that one identified is jetty TYN 084/091 and the remaining 6 apparently stretch southwards from this (S2). This would suggest that they are not the same as the wood scatter described above but it should be worth remembering that this area was surveyed as part of the SCCAS Coastal Survey in 2002 and no features were seen in the area described. No further information is available from Peter Murphy. (S3)
2006/2007: Site was visited as part of a targeted inter-tidal survey. The feature comprised a series of possible roundwood wattles running parallel with, and pressed with grey clay exposed along the foreshore. The spread of timbers measured no more than 2m in width and 11m in length, and extremely localised, appearing to be eroding out from under the salt-marsh edge. While the timbers looked to be deliberately laid, they showed no obvious evidence of being pegged down or held in place. When the site was revisited for full recording, no structured remains survived. Despite an extensive search of the surrounding foreshore and eroding salt-marsh edge, no further archaeological evidence was identified (S4).
