Full Description

Buildings etc., scatter. In multi-period site LKH 072. Sherds scatter over area circa 300m in diameter (defined 1949)(S3)(R1).
Finds from N of two main fields, known as `The Roman site' or `Roman Field' up to 1945 described in (S8).
In 1948-1949 Grace Briscoe excavated area of cropmarks & Rom scatter in S (Rearing) field, by trenches and open area. Found chalk floors and wall, posthole structure (?), ditch system to SW, chalk structures, hearths and occupation soil. Various finds listed in (S1) dateable to mainly C3 & C4, include mixed pottery including Samian, colour coated, shell gritted andWest Stow type wares, 43 coins, a bronze small hanging vessel (S7) possibly a censer ?, fantail and `rod-bow type' brooches, a bronze patera and pin etc (S1)(S2).
Later finds include a bronze C3-C4 key found by (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s)'.

Within multiperiod site LKH 072. Also a `wheel-brooch', reputedly from the (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s), in Cambridge Museum (S4)(R2) and a `votive axe' - miniature handled bronze axe, 4.1cms long (cf LKH 018 and LKH 109 - in next field), found with metal detector by (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) (S5).
1978: (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) located `8 to 10 kilns in area of Rom site (011) after fields ploughed deeper than usual'. Identified on surface by reddened soil and fired clay kiln fragments. Three excavated by (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) - see LKH 061 and 062, third contained no pottery (S6), see LKH 019 for further excavated kiln within this site and LKH 073 for kiln in field to W.
