Full Description

Kings Road (formerly Cemetery Road) & Chalk Lane (now Chalk Road (South)) exposed when former hall (Scout, Boys Brigade or ATC hut?) collapsed in 1960s into remains of possible chalk workings and adits. Various holes had also, on occasions, opened up in the rear gardens of some of the properties on the corner of and fronting Kings Road (S1).
Area defined on HER map an approximation only based on descriptions above and location of former hut.
Note: E side of Chalk Lane formerly (OS map of 1880s) fronted by row of Victorian terraces & rear gardens suggesting pits/voids predate these.
Also note ventilation shaft BSE 184 to N.
In 1979 a 15 feet wide at the mouth and 42 feet deep hole appeared at Chalk Road (S2) - this site or BSE 184?
Early maps and documentary sources not checked.
