Full Description

Area of 'red earth', briquetage, grey ware & oyster shells adjoining scatter of finds of grey ware, briquetage & tile within Oak Wood just above zero metre contour (S1). Sample of briquetage and Roman tile, and Roman grey ware jar sherds (?1st/2nd century) and a thickened rim bowl (type series 6.18, c. 120-270) in archive.

April 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme.
A possible former mound could be visible on an oblique aerial photograph (S2) associated with the possible Roman saltern described above in the north east of Oak Wood. It was not possible to be certain whether the mound was archaeological in nature, or merely caused by a variation in vegetation.
E. Ford (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 23rd April 2015.
