Full Description
Extant machine gun emplacement with ROC post on top, at Beach Farm, Benacre
The site of a Royal Observer Corps monitoring post. The site is located (with all the surface features cleared away) on the east side of a farm track on the top of the bank and next to a pillbox. 100 yards west of a private gated road to Beach Farm. Steps lead up the bank from the farm track. The underground post was a few yards north of the pillbox. The site was built as part of an extensive network of posts designed to confirm and report hostile aircraft and nuclear attacks on the United Kingdom. At the time of the Defence of Britain survey (1995-2002) the site was found to remain in an uncertain condition. The site was opened during June 1961 and closed in October 1968. The surface features were demolished in 1995 for safety reasons and the shaft filled with rubble and soil. Since then the infill has slumped a little and access could be gained with some digging.
