Full Description

Beaker pottery and LBA founders' hoards.
1949 : TM 3738 5075 (also see below) Bronze hoard (II) and Beaker sherds brought up by deep ploughing in 'Big Mount Field' on crest of hill. Excavations were carried out by B Brown for Ipswich Museum: "Indications were found of an occupation floor with fire hearth from which the Beaker sherds came". The LBA hoard seems to have been deposited near the Beaker hearth. Hoard contained 13 socketed axes, 5 small fragments of others, 1 fragment of a small rivetted spearhead, 2 small knives, 15 lumps of scrap bronze, and 1 bronze 'jet' (S1). The Basil Brown archive contains details of BA excavation, with photographs and sketches of site and finds (S4).
1954 : TM 374 507 Part of socketed axe found by Sir Peter Greenwell (S2).
1955 : TM 3737 5075 (also see below) Bronze hoard (III) found close to site of first hoard. Found by ploughing. Contained parts of 2 winged axes, 10 socketed axes, fragments of 5 others, portion of a sword blade, 2 bronze 'jets', 11 lumps of scrap bronze. Loaned to Ipswich Museum by Sir Peter Greenwell.
1982 : Finds from LBA bronze hoard at Neutral Farm purchased by Ipswich Museum from Fox & Company,Yeovil. Comprised sword fragment, spearhead fragment, 3 socketed axes. Probably parts of hoards II or III?
Stanley West Ms dated 1954 sites Hoard II at TM 3742 5067 and lists 10 socketed axes, 4 fragments of others, socket and portion of rivetted spearhead, 2 flat knives, bronze runner with 2 jets, quantity of bronze cake. Hoard III is sited at TM 3739 5071 and is listed as 2 winged axe fragments, 7 socketed axes, fragments of 8 others, sword fragment, bronze runner with 2 jets, bronze runner with 3 jets, quantity of bronze cakes. At TM 3744 5068 quantities of Beaker pottery fragments were found (S5). Hoards II & III were therefore found about 50m apart according to (S5).
Also note, hoard I found in circa 1845, which consisted of 19 axes, appears to have been described as from Butley in error - actually Poslingford Hoard of EBA date (S7) - see BUT Misc BA (S5).
Hoards II & III have been drawn and are to be found in Bronze Age Hoards archive. The socketed axes include 7 faceted and 2 linear faceted axes.
For more details of pottery beaker see (S6).
