Full Description

The excavation revealed remains dating from the Mesolithic through to the post-medieval period. Significant features were limited to the later Neolithic or early Bronze Age, the early Iron Age and the later Iron Age. The remains indicate that during the later Neolithic or early Bronze Age a rectilinear enclosure was established at the site [dating very dubious - radiocarbon dates needed]. Very small amounts of Beaker pottery and struck flint were recovered. No domestic features were encountered despite the pottery possibly being of a domestic type and it seems likely that either such features had not survived or were sited beyond the limits of the excavation. A droveway defined by parallel drainage ditches, with an enclosure appended to it were in use at the site during the Early Iron Age, a system of gates or barriers apparently regulating the movement of livestock between the enclosure and the droveway [linked to cropmarks of a larger field boundary sytem]. The small [!] pottery assemblage from the droveway indicates that it was probably active in the period 600-350BC. At least thirty-seven charcoal-filled pits encountered at the site, which have been interpreted as charcoal clamps, post-dated the droveway and probably date to the later Iron Age. The number of clamps indicates the frequent or prolonged use of the site for the manufacture of charcoal (S1). Radiocarbon dating outstanding.
