Full Description

Group of agricultural buildings in the grounds of a 16th C farmhouse with a high quality timber frame. The farmhouse was reconstructed c.1600 into a three cell, lobby entrance, cross passage type house. The house was extended and a number of alterations were carried out during the 18th and 19th C.

Also present at the site is a 17th C timber-framed and brick threshing barn with four bays. An integral stable with a hayloft above is located in one bay. Alterations were also carried out to the barn during the 18th and 19th C.

A 17th C timber-framed and brick cartlodge was conveted into a granary during the 19th C, at which time a range of other buildings were constructed. This includes a brick stable and carriage house, a brick cowhouse and brick shelter sheds (S1).

Oak Hill Farm, Metfield. 19th century farmstead and 16th century farmhouse with converted buildings. Loose courtyard three-sided plan formed by working agricultural buildings. Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
