Full Description

2013: A metal detector survey was carried out on an unploughed field, known as Garden Field, which lies immediately to the north-west of the Sutton Hoo visitor centre. Dateable finds were recovered from the Roman, Saxon and post-medieval periods. The range of objects included the mundane, such as unidentifiable fragments of sheet or droplets, but also more notable items such as two Roman coins. The most significant finds were four further fragments from the Bromeswell Bucket (BML 009). All fragments of this objects found in 2012 were associated with a geophysical anomaly associated with modern ground disturbance. This suggests any future attempt to excavate and record an area around the findspot of the Bromeswell Bucket (BML 009) would be advantageous from a conservation point of view as the associated deposits may already be compromised (S1).

2016: Geophysical Survey (fluxgate gradiometer and magnetic susceptibility meter survey) was carried out and was successful in recording a range of anomalies. Positive linear trends indicative of former settlement ditches or field boundaries from at least three separate phases, thermoremanent responses indicative of a kiln type anomaly, and discrete pit type anomalies. The magnetic susceptibility meter survey revealed high readings which may derive from settlement type activity. Lower readings were in the western half of the field (S2).

October 2016: SA along with NT volunteers and visitors to Sutton Hoo undertook a reconnaissance earth resistance meter survey on land set aside for pasture for rear breed rams. The survey successfully recorded high and low resistance anomalies indicative of archaeological ditches and pits, natural variations within the superficial geology and a modern service trench that disturbed the location of the 'Bromeswell Bucket' (S3).
