Monument record ADT 009 - Cropmarks of two phases of trackways, enclosures and fields of probable later prehistoric to Roman date

Please read our .

Summary

The cropmarks of two phases of trackways, enclosures and fields of probable later prehistoric to Roman date. The cropmarks are likely to relate to others recorded in this area, most notably ADT 001 and ADT 013, see also ADT 066. The relationship of the trackways to the ring ditches, such as ADT 008 and ADT 007 would suggest that the round barrows survived as significant mounds when the trackway was laid out and maintained.

Full Description

Linear cropmarks (centred on TM360344222) (S1). Includes ring ditches ADT 007, 008.
A number of linear ditches running across the fields to the east of Buckanay Farm, including two parallel ditches which could represent a trackway which runs across both fields and continues at the other side of the farm. (S2) (S2)
Polygon altered to include more of the trackway.
CUCAP collection not consulted for NMP.

The site has been extended to the west and north to include additional cropmarks of trackways and fields visible on aerial photographs (S4-S12). It must be stated that this site now includes at least two phases of trackways, fields and boundaries, but the features could not easily be split due to the possibly inclusion of earlier boundaries into later features and the change of angle of some of the major linear features such as the trackways.
In record ADT 066 it was suggested that the southern trackway of this site continued to the west to join up with trackways recorded under ADT 013. However this is not certain and the tracks may curve up to the northwest towards ADT 001 rather than directly to the west towards ADT 013 as suggested – although this is not certain due to some blanker areas of mapping in-between the sites. Certainly the additional trackway identified to the north of ADT 009 appears to curve towards ADT 001, and other fragmentary cropmarks recorded under ADT 103, also.
The date of these trackways, enclosures and fields is unknown, but a later prehistoric/Middle Bronze Age to Roman date is most likely – and as stated above – the cropmarks would appear to represent at least two phases. The relationship of the trackways to the ring ditches, such as ADT 008 and ADT 007 would suggest that the round barrows survived as significant mounds when the trackway was laid out and maintained. However some smaller ring ditches recorded within this site may represent the remains of prehistoric to Roman roundhouses, rather than Bronze Age round barrows.
