Full Description

March 2014: Six 25m trench evaluation carried out at West Farm, Barnham, three areas of potential interest identified by previous geophysical survey. A large (40mx40m) square enclousure (western enclousure), a small sub-square enclousure (eastern enclousure) and a pair of ditches (possible trackway).
The western enclousure ditches produced a low quantity of flint and animal bone finds.
The inner ditch of eastern enclousure produced 976 of the c.2100 flint finds of site and early neolithic pottery. Located within the enclousure a spread whithin a possible natural feature sealed a neolithic possible small pit or post hole that produced 496 pieces of worked flint and 39 sherds of pottery.
The trench targeting the possible trackway identified a tree bole and a shawlow narrow undated ditch, that appears to point at eastern enclousure. This position might seem more than coincidental and it too may have formed part of a wider "ritual" landscape. (S1)
