Full Description
2010: Medieval and Post Medieval artefact scatter identified during a fieldwalking survey at Sharpe's Corner. In total 71 artefacts were identified from 67 individual findspots. The artefacts recovered were predominantly Medieval and Post Medieval pottery and ceramic building material. A single sherd of Roman pottery and three later prehistoric worked flints were also identified during the survey (S1).
No finds or features of archaeological interest were identified during monitoring of geo-technical testpits on the site (S2).
The magnetometry revealed a number of low-magnitude linear and curvilinear anomalies, some of which may represent archaeological features, although interpretation is limited due to weak contrast and the presence of strong cultivation marks. A possible rectilinear or sub-rounded anomaly in the north-east of the site may indicate an enclosure, but its origin remains uncertain, with similar features elsewhere on the site likely to be natural. A zone of patterned ground, indicative of periglacial conditions, was identified along the eastern edge of the site. A strong linear anomaly in the central area may represent a former field boundary. Other anomalies include magnetic debris, modern services, and features of agricultural origin. Metal detecting recovered eight finds, mostly post-medieval in date, including coins, buttons, lead objects and a possible lead steelyard weight may be of earlier origin (S3).
