Full Description

60 coins of Aethelred II (AD 978-1016)(S1), found together and partly contained within a folded disc brooch. Hoard dated 1002-1003 (S1). Whilst metal detecting (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) reported finding the hoard beside the river Waveney flood bank, initially at (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s)(S4). Circumstantial evidence suggests that this was not in fact the true find spot. The coroners court of 13th November 1986, accepted his evidence and a findspot of (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s), found the items to be a hoard and seized them for the Crown (S2). However, it seems likely that the material in which the hoard was found, if indeed it was found where claimed, was a redeposition of clay to augment river defences, possibly(?) originating from a pit near Gillingham Hall, Norfolk (see Parish file).
An iron claw hammer was reported found (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) at the same location. It may have the same date as the rest of the hoard but is not 'intrinsically' dateable beyond Rom to Med range of claw hammers. Iron stain on brooch may prove the association?
Silver disc brooch 113mm in diameter 48.36 gm; decorated with a grid of 9 bosses and general repousse design; signs of tinning for a pin on the reverse. These late Saxon disc brooches date from the early C9 for 200 years; closest parallels for this example Styco, Sweden circa AD 1002 (S3).
