Full Description

Area of Roman tiles found in digging a narrow water pipe trench. Small area cleared adjacent to trench, exposed two complete tegulae, flat side up, associated with a patch of yellow clay and some reddened clay below the tiles, also numerous fragments of tegula and a few box tile fragments (S1). All the finds lie in a dark brown fairly sandy loam, ? hillwash, and no archaeological features around the clay and tiles could be differentiated. Boulder clay was noted at about 0.8m depth in digging pipe trench. The material is either part of a structure i.e. a floor (but seems too limited in extent) or more likely dumped (perhaps to level up). Grey ware pottery sherds were found with the tiles but little from elsewhere along the trench. Surface finds have indicated Rom activity on the field to the E (WSS 008); the intervening area is relatively low and has not been systematically examined.
