Monument record BLB 107 - Earthworks of two mounds, possible round barrows

Please read our .

Summary

Two sub-circular mounds are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs on land to the south of Westwood Lodge, Blythburgh. It was considered probable that these features, particularly that to the north, represent natural topographical undulations, although there is a small possibility that one or both of these features could represent Bronze Age round barrows.

Full Description

January 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Beauty National Mapping Programme.
Two sub-circular mounds are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs (S1-S2) on land to the south of Westwood Lodge, Blythburgh. It was considered probable that these features, particularly that to the north, represent natural topographical undulations, although there is a small possibility that one or both of these features could represent Bronze Age round barrows.
They were recorded since they are in the vicinity of a mound recorded previously (SHER BLB 028), but it whilst it was difficult to discern from most recent photography whether either of these mounds are still visible as earthworks on the ground, these mounds are visible on Lidar imagery from 2010 (S2), and may warrant further ground survey.
E. Ford (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 14th January 2015.
