Monument record HLY 160 - Site of small, sub-rectangular enclosure unknown date, possibly a Neolithic long barrow or mortuary enclosure

Please read our .

Summary

A possible small, sub-rectangular enclosure of unknown date, perhaps a Neolithic funerary site, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. It is surrounded by the cropmarks of multi-period enclosures, settlement, trackways and field systems (HLY 158), of unknown date but potentially spanning all periods from Bronze Age to post medieval. The possible enclosure described here is recorded separately due to its distinctive plan; enclosures of similar size and shape have been interpreted as possible Neolithic long barrows or mortuary enclosures.

Full Description

April 2016. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme.
A possible small, sub-rectangular enclosure of unknown date, perhaps a Neolithic funerary site, is visible as a cropmark on an aerial photograph (S1). A small pit-like cropmark adjacent to the enclosure has been included in the site. It should be noted, however, that the northwest side of the enclosure is not particularly clear. It is possible that this has been misinterpreted and mapped incorrectly, in which case the remainder of the enclosure is likely to simply be another element within the larger, multi-period cropmark site (HLY 158).
