Full Description
2016: Excavation revealed evidence for medieval settlement in the form of a clay and flint built structure and proposed puddling pit with an associated feature; ovens or corn driers, a ditch, post-holes, pits, occupational deposits and redeposited geological clay. The evidence is indicative of domestic activity, including manufacturing, food processing and storage, between the 12th-14th century and suggests that occupation appeared to cease during the 15th-16th centuries. The 15th-16th centuries were represented by a pit containing pottery, animal remains a piece of iron and two shells. Colluvium deposits were revealed and tentatively assigned a prehistoric date. Five unstratified worked flints were recovered; a side scraper and blade typologically dated at Late Mesolithic-Early Neolithic; 1 core and two flakes typologically dated to the late Neolithic-Early Bronze Age. Several undated ditches and pits were also revealed (S2).
2016: Evaluation revealed an earthwork of a woodbank demonstrating a managed landscape, surface deposits consisting of rammed, re-deposited geological clay, a formation flint nodules, and an enlongated terminus feature which contained areas of in-situ buring that may be remains of a kiln or oven. Sherds of medieval pottery c12-14th century were recovered from the features (S1).
