Full Description

2017: Excavation revealed eleven unurned cremation burials in the centre of the site. There was no dating evidence associated with these. A small number of isolated pits were excavated, again no dating evidence was recovered. Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2017 (S3). Full report to follow.

2018: Archaeological excavation was undertaken as part of the East Anglia One Offshore Windfarm works on land off Cockfield Hall Lanes know as site 11 by Archaeology Wales, on behalf of Wardell Armstrong LLP. Twenty one archaeological features were identified broadly characterised as ditches, pits and postholes with the spatial arrange not indicating any structures, or were isolated features. Artefactual materials recovered ranges form the Iron Age to Modern period primarily from the top and subsoils. Datable material found in individual features were heavily abraded indicating a probable secondary deposition. This resulted in a lack of datable evidence for the archaeological features however these could of possible Late Medieval to Post Medieval origin (S1).

2018: An archaeological excavation was undertaken as part of the East Anglia One Offshore Windfarm project (EAOne) at site 11b land off Wirnesham Road, Westerfield. A previous evaluation revealed evidence of archaeological features. This subsequent excavation revealed two phases of activity. The first phase was represented by a small Bronze Age cremation cemetery, which consisted of ten un0urned cremation burials, and a small pit. The second phase was represented by a late post medieval field boundary. Several undated pits were also found. (S2)
