Full Description

A linear cut aligned N-S and interpreted as a possible oven. The northern end was 0.75m wide and roughly rectangular in shape. To the south the cut narrowed to 0.25m wide, at a point approximately 2m from the northern end, and continued for 0.35m before encountering ?stoke pit 2010. The lower fill comprised a dense charcoal layer c.0.05m thick. At the northern end this was overlain by a lens of dark brown silty sand with frequent charcoal flecks. Elsewhere it was overlain by a layer of slightly ?heat reddened silt containing numerous shells, some of which appear to be burnt, and frequent charcoal flecks. This was in turn overlain by a further layer of dark brown silty sand with charcoal. The ?heat reddened silt layer was present across the entire feature, appearing as a lining to part of the cut when viewed in plan. It was very similar to the primary layer recorded lining the adjacent pit (2010). This cut overlies and partially truncates the Period 11.1 pit feature 2013. There was no visible cut between the adjacent pit 2010 and as both have very similar fills it seems likely that they are associated and contemporary Finds retrieved from the fill comprise a single sherd of Thetford Ware, a melted lump of lead (small fmd 2541) and twenty-two fragments of ceramic building material. Also, twenty-nine oyster shells and thirty-nine other shells were retained as a sample., (S1).
