Monument record WTM 061 - Late Saxon and medieval rural activity, Church Road

Archaeological trial trench evaluation identified Late Saxon and medieval activity on the form of ditches, gullies, and pits. Few finds were recovered and it was not possible to establish the precise nature of these activities. Agricultural activities appear to have occurred on this site during the medieval period and the environmental evidence is consistent with a medieval rural site and the growing of cereal and pulse crops. There was no evidence of crop processing and the disposal of domestic waste into a large pit and gully and debris from domestic hearths suggest that settlement occurred nearby. Some of the animal bones showed evidence of dog gnawing (S1).

Archaeological monitoring following the trial trench evaluation identified a probable ditch and two pit like features. Few datable finds were recovered in association with these features. The depths of the features limited the ability to fully investigate. One of the large pits contained modern plastic waste and building material and may relate to previous construction works. The second pit continued organic peaty material at the base and may indicate its use as a pond or was open for a period of time (S2).
