Full Description
Extensive finds scatter, associated with coin hoards of C1 (SUT 041) and mid C4 (SUT 002).
Initially identified as a scatter of grey ware and brick in an outcrop of septaria at (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) (S1).
Fieldwalking shows that the pottery scatter extends over a broad area, mainly grey wares, probably range C1 - early C4 (one sherd probable Much Hadham type, grey ware mortaria, early storage vessel, Belgic cordonned form), and a few pieces of tile (S2).
Metal detecting finds from the same area include coins (range Domitian to 350's), six Colchester derivative type brooches, hod hill brooch, and early beaked type brooch (probably late IA), enamelled disc brooch, finger ring, pin, bronze terminal (S3).
Further metal detected finds include:-
1989: Circular lid (see Un), Ae4 coin & bronze terminal with iron shaft attached (S5). Details in (S4). Area of finds extended E, June 1990.
Also BA pottery, IA pottery, coin, ESax clasp, MSax pottery.
2013: Incomplete copper-alloy strap end missing the terminal, which may have been bifurcated for use as a nail cleaner, and decorated with an incised bird, probably intended to represent a peacock, and punched dot and circle motifs, probably 4th century (SF-82ED06). Found whilst metal detecting (S6)
