Full Description
Grade II listed building. House. 1792, for George Doughty. Extensive alterations and additions 1852 in Italian Renaissance style; these additions mostly demolished 1920's. Yellow brick, stone and stucco ornament. 2-storeys. 5 window range, 2:1:2, the centre bay set forward slightly. Sashes with glazing bars, stucco architraves. Central doorway: porch with square pillars and Ionic columns; 6-panel door with shouldered architrave. First floor string course. Central window with segmental pediment on console brackets. Projecting stone cornice with heavy brackets; parapet with motto "PALMA NON SINE PVLVERE" over centre bay and embellished coat of arms above. Roof not visible. Single-storey wing to left hand side, part of C19 extensions. Right hand return front with curved 3 window bay; pierced stone balcony supported on paired Tuscan columns. Home of Charles Montagu Doughty (1843-1926), author of 'Travels in Arabia Deserta' (S1).
