Full Description

Symonds is a grade II-listed timber-framed building which contains an early-15th century jettied cross-wing and the fragmentary remains of a contemporary open hall. The historic structure has been substantially extended to the right, left and rear during recent decades, and the structure of the present kitchen, which occupies the site of the medieval hall, dates only from the late-20th century. The description of the property in the Schedule of Listed Buildings is inaccurate in dating this structure to the 17th century as it is absent from photographs taken in the 1970s. The roof-light in the rear elevation of the same structure is a contemporary
feature, and there is no evidence that it formerly possessed a dormer window. A survey of the historic buildings of Stonham Aspal published in 1971 misinterpreted the jettied cross-wing as an open hall and wrongly ascribed it to the early-14th century (S1).
