Summary

Possible Second World War training features within a large post medieval extraction pit and are seen as earthworks on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data. The features most likely relate to Second World War military training and consist of a series of possible explosive craters, practice trenches, pits, possible extraction and trackways. The Second World War features are situated within a large pit, most likely for post medieval extraction, and is recorded as “Town Pit” on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map. The majority of the possible Second World War features have been levelled or removed.

October 2019. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
Possible Second World War training features within a large post medieval extraction pit and are seen as earthworks on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data (S1-S4). The features most likely relate to Second World War military training and consist of a series of possible explosive craters, practice trenches, pits, possible Second World War extraction and trackways. The Second World War features are situated within a large pit, most likely for post medieval extraction, and is recorded as “Town Pit” on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map. The majority of the possible Second World War features have been levelled or removed. A number finds have been recorded from inside the pit from previous work (See SHER IKL 025).
