Monument record WSW 209 - Possible Second World War mounds and pits.

Please read our .

Summary

An area of possible Second World War pits and mounds are seen as earthworks on aerial photographs and on visualised lidar data. The feature consists of a line of small pits, two possible mounds, two pits and banks and a large open pit. It is possible that the mounds, pits with banks and the line of pits may possibly relate to Second World War training features or possible Second World War extraction. Its also possible that the large open pit may be a post medieval or Second World War extraction pit not seen on the First Edition Ordnance Survey maps. The majority of the features have been levelled with some of pits and mounds seen surviving on the visualised lidar data (from a survey flown in 2015).

Full Description

October 2019. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
An area of possible Second World War pits and mounds are seen as earthworks on aerial photographs and on visualised lidar data (S1-S2). The feature consists of a line of small pits (centred at TL 8140 7147), two possible mounds (centred at TL 8145 7145 and at TL 8150 7143), two pits and banks (centred at TL 8136 7148 and at TL 8150 7144) and a large open pit (centred at TL 8148 7147). It is possible that the mounds, pits with banks and the line of pits may possibly relate to Second World War training features or possible Second World War extraction. Its also possible that the large open pit may be a post medieval or Second World War extraction pit not seen on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map (S3). Furthermore, it is possible that the pit located at TL 8150 7145 may be a modern feature. The majority of the features have been levelled with some of pits and mounds seen surviving on the visualised lidar data (from a survey flown in 2015).
