Full Description

Moat. Square, occupied, isolated on W edge of parish (S1).
Moat shown on estate map of 1757 made by T Skynner for Charles, Lord Maynard (S2). This shows on L-shaped building within the moat, a broad entrance causeway on the N side and various farm buildings outside the moat.
Manor of Denham held in the 14th century by the de Denham family, as half a knight's fee held of the Honour of Eye. Acquired by the Bedingfield family in the late 15th century. Belonged to Sir Henry Bedingfield of Oxburgh in the early 17th century, when there is a reference to a gatehouse here bearing carved coats-of-arms relating to the Bedingfield family, and further shields and the date 1576 on a bridge (S3). A survey of the site in 1651, following its forfeiture by Bedingfield, lists the rooms in the house, also `a Gate House, 2 decayed rooms, and 2 corn chambers over them, one Green Court and one small garden within the Moat' and 2 barns, a `Gat House', a stable, a cowhouse, a hayhouse and several `outbarns', together with `an ancient decayed orchard without the moat' (S4).
Present house is a double-pile structure with a rear range of apparent 16th century date with a queen-post roof. Altered in the mid 19th century (S5). However the 1757 map does not show a building tin this position, so perhaps parts of an earlier house have been moved and reconstructed.
