Summary

A possible medieval-post medieval enclosure is seen as a cropmark on aerial photographs. The enclosure is roughly trapezoidal in shape with a possible internal and external ditch on the features south side. The enclosure most likely relates to a post medieval stock enclosure although it is possible that the enclosure maybe medieval in date. The enclosure can be seen as an earthwork in the 1940s, has been levelled by the 1950s and is subsequently seen as a cropmark.

Full Description

January 2020. Breckland National Mapping Programme.
A possible medieval-post medieval enclosure is seen as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The enclosure is roughly trapezoidal in shape with a possible internal and external ditch on the features south side. The enclosure most likely relates to a post medieval stock enclosure although it is possible that the enclosure maybe medieval in date. The enclosure can be seen as an earthwork in the 1940s, has been levelled by the 1950s (S2) and is subsequently seen as a cropmark. The enclosure is not seen on the Frist Edition Ordnance survey map (S3). The enclosure is in close proximity to banks and possible hollow ways which may relate to the supposed course of the Ickneild way to the east (ELV 016 and IKL 364).
