Full Description
2020: The earliest feature revealed by the archaeological evaluation was a pit, which contained an abraded medieval cooking pot rim dated to the late 12th–14th centuries. Two large linear features were also found, these may represent the W and S arms of the moat, infilled in the 18th–19th centuries to allow for the construction of a range of farm buildings and yard. The moat ditch contained an oak plank, which likely formed part of the internal fittings of an agricultural structure or outbuilding. Evidence of the moat being maintained (re-cut) was recorded, and it seems likely that the moat was further infilled in the 18th - 19th centuries to allow for the construction of a range of farm buildings and associated yard as depicted on the Hodskinson Map of 1783 and thereafter. These buildings were subsequently demolished and replaced by the current barns in the 20th century (S1).
Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2020 (S2).
