Full Description
Priory and Church of Creeting St Olave (site of).
Founded pre 1087 as a cell of the Benedictine abbey of St Mary of Grestein in Normandy, by Robert, Count of Mortain (S1).
Appears only to have had a prior and was placed in the care of Priory of Wilmington, Sussex (main cell of Grestein in England). In 1347 the patronage was given to a merchant called Tydeman de Lymburgh and in 1360 it was sold to Sir Edmunde de la Pole (S2)(R1)(R2).
The church appears still to have been in existence in 1532 when John Pinkeney was buried in the chancel. Recorded as still being in use during the Commonwealth visitations between 1643-1660 (Lambeth Palace Library). The church had long since been demolished in 1764 (R3). Recorded as `in ruins' in 1783 (S3).
In the Deanery of Bosmere (R4).
Parish consolidated with Creeting All Saints circa 1711 (R2).
March 2001: Relocated to TM 0999 5767 (from OS plotted location of TM 0997 5764) based on recent fieldwalking, geophysical and trenched excavations by Nigel Macbeth and Creeting Churches project (S4).
Results of investigations summarised in (S5).
Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2001 (S6).
