Full Description

Bronze seal of Bishop Aethelwald of Dommoc, c. AD 850.
Dug up by a labourer in a garden about 200 yards from the site of the monastery at Eye. It was subsequently acquired by a Mr Fenner of Eye who allowed it to be exhibited at the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1822. Seal is bronze, mitre shaped, of two rows of arches surmounted by a rude fleur de lis and supported by nine wolves heads in the interstices of the arches, the eyes were originally inlaid with small garnets, of which only one survives.
