Full Description

The Swan Inn is a public house of predominantly early 17th- century timber and plaster construction, with a tiled roof and a large brick chimney stack. A building known as Le Swan was previously recorded in Clare during the 15th century, and it is possible that the current public house lies on the site of an earlier inn of the same name.

The Public House lies within a former burgage plot which extends to the rear (west) and mirrors the width of the building. The core of the historic building lies along the roadside fronting onto High Street and is adjoined by single-storey extensions to the rear (western elevation). The exterior carving on the eastern façade of the asset,
located above the entrance to the asset, was potentially the sill to an oriel window in the castle and is now used as the pub sign (S1).
