Full Description

2025: Archaeological evaluation identified residual prehistoric finds in later features and Roman period features. An undated cremation was idendtified which contained the remains of a single juvenile. The Roman features comprising a series of ditches and several pits likely represents farmland activity associated with a nearby farmstead. (S1)

2025: Two excavation areas were opened following the results of the earlier evaluation. This revealed a cluster of four pits of probable early Neolithic date and a second unurned cremation burial, along with three other small pits near to the cremations that contained funeral pyre material associated with the small late Bronze Age cemetery.
Part of an Early Romano-British rectilinear ditch system were investigated, with at least two phases of agricultural ditches forming the boundaries of a series of fields. Other ditches of Romano-British date where also identified but their precise date within the Romano-British period is uncertain due to the almost total absence of finds and the broad date range of the small number of sherds that where recovered.
There were also several undated ditches and other features, which could be associated with the roman activity but based on their relative alignment and location, they could pre or post date this period.
Also present was a system of post-medieval field boundaries. These boundaries are not shown on historic mapping and where probably removed as part of the enclosure act in the early 19th century. (S2)
