Full Description
Moat. Occupied, irregular oval. Adjoins S side of churchyard. Circa 90m NE-SW, 80m transversely, 12m wide. (Outer 'moat' is series of drainage ditches.)
2003: Moat desilting monitoring revealed a broad, V shaped profile with a flat bottom and relatively steep sides cut into the underlying natural clay deposits. The moat in general is between 2m and 3m deep and up to 12m wide. No evidence was noted for any moat-related structures or revetment, apart from a post medieval brick revetment on either side of the bridge of a similar date on the northern side of the hall. In the southeastern quarter of the moat little was seen of the make up of the causeway linking the farmyard on the adjacent part of the island to the surrounding area. No finds of archaeological interest was seen in the silt removed from the moat (S1).
May 2004: Evaluation in advance of barn conversion. Two test pits through floors, only redeposited clay and base of chalk floor revealed (S2).
Features visible on Lidar. See associated files.
