Full Description

Large scatter of pottery and tile on land (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s). Three areas of denser tile and gravel noted as possible buildings (S1). Reports of numerous metal detected finds and holes dug to reveal tiles at 18 inches with pottery below (S2). Finds (not seen) included a gold strap fitting (?) and C3-C4 coins (S3). Further finds include: Samian base with stamp (Chresimus?), bronze head with suspension loop, axe shaped brooch (of unusual form), foot shaped brooch, fragments of probable Colchester derivative brooches, bronze key and a lock bolt (S4).
The site was proposed for scheduling in 1979 and put forward by the Inspector in 1980 but nothing further happened (S5).
1995: Finds of tile, pottery, iron, window glass, bone and oyster shell from area of building material & flint cobbles (?) below ploughsoil. Details in (S6).
(see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s): Metal detected Nauheim derivative type brooch fragment & flattened blob of white metal - metalworking debris (?) found (S6).
See also LMD 045 (?building on AP) in field to E.
July & September 2006: geophysical survey by Cambridge University revealed range of buildings including substantial villa (see STS 010) and possible bathhouse to south (adjoining stream), a 'quiet area', possibly a garden, to the NW and another range of buildings, including a very large aisled posthole structure, within an enclosure further upslope to the NW. Various circular & other undated linear features also occur over the site. Details in (S7).
Also IA.
1996: Bronze belt mount, 1mm thick, 1.5mm thick at rib. See (S7) for details.
