Full Description
Collegiate Church of St John Baptist - site of.
Collegiate church for seven secular canons founded circa 1044-1065 at Clare by Earl Aelfric (R1)(R2). Founded by 'earl' Aelfric son of Wihtgar (also see BRD 123) circa 1045
Mentioned in Domesday, with reference to original grant (S1). In 1090 Gilbert de Clare granted the church to the Abbey of Bec in Normandy, to be a priory cell. This was moved in 1124 to Stoke-by-Clare (R3). Various C12 documents (and the one of 1090) refer to the church as having been 'in castello Clarae' (R4).
