Monument record BND 002 - Site of Rectory, Barnardiston

A medieval moated site situated north east of All Saints Church. The moat island measures up to 26 metres by 32 metres and is surrounded on the north, west and part of the south sides by a seasonally waterfilled moat up to 8 metres wide and at least 1.5 metres deep. The eastern and part of the southern moat arms have been infilled. A fishpond shown on the 1852 enclosure map and lying north west of the moat is believed to have been connected to it originally. The same map shows the moat with 4 waterfilled arms and a causeway across the eastern arm. A field south east of the moat is marked on the map as 'Dovehouse field', suggesting that the moated site originally supported a house with which a dovehouse was associated. Scheduled.
