Full Description

Moat. Rectangular, wet, occupied, isolated. Late. Present house late C15 (S1).
Site of the manor of Giffords Hall. This manor was held as half a knight's fee the Gifford/Giffard family; as tenants of the Earl Warren, in the first half of the 14th century. It was subsequently held by the Clopton Family and by Sir Hugh Francis. Towards the middle of the 15th century it was inherited by Isabel Francis who married Thomas Heigham. The Heighams lived here until the death of Thomas Heigham in 1630 (S2). The original part of the house may have been built by Clement Heigham between 1480 and 1521 (S3). The house was unoccupied for about 20 years at the end of the 19th century, until it was rescued from demolition by Seymour Lucas RA in 1904 (S3,S4). It was subsequently restored and enlarged by Adolphus Henry Fass c.1909-19 (S3 & S4). Fass was also probably responsible for the Tudor style garden. 1995: The northern arm of the moat was partly infilled after 1904, the west arm is partly silted up, but the other two arms are wet. There is a brick bridge (?18th century+) across the middle of the south side. The depiction of the site on the 1841 Tithe Map suggests that there may have been a small gatehouse on the island end of the bridge (S5).
1998: Foundations noted in a pipe trench. See parish file for plan etc. (S6).

Features visible on Lidar. See associated files.
