Full Description

Roman tessellated pavement is recorded by Basil Brown as follows. "Information given 1948-49 by a lady resident of Lavenham affirms that a Roman tessellated pavement is believed beneath a lawn. This may be in the vicinity of Grove House." (S1).
Grove House and its rear garden, centred on TL 9165 4922, lays between Lady and Barn Streets and is named on the OS 25" edition of 1885. Ranson, in 1965, says a Rom bath or crypt was discovered in the garden of Grove House as well as an underground passage from the Barn Street side towards the Guildhall (R1). It seems likely the Rom bath or crypt is the same as the `tessellated pavement'. Rom?
In January 1987, H Bramer of Shilling Old Grange (also known as The Grange), Lavenham advised that he had a photocopy of a report on Lavenham, which mentioned a Roman building on his property (S2).
The remains in the garden of Grove House were described in 1897 as discovered "some years ago" and "what seemed to be a Roman bath of considerable size" which was reburied after attracting many visitors (S3).
Also said (according to un-named resident of Lavenham) to lie within the grounds of Mollett [Molet} House on Barn Street [TL 9165 4927](S4), which is the same location as the garden of Grove House!.
