Full Description
Pottery scatter, fairly dense over largish area of field. A part of a ditch was excavated by N Smedley and E Owles of Ipswich Museum - 2 feet 9 inches deep x 5 feet wide containing black earth and pottery including a stamped Samian base, form 18, probably GERMANVS (AD 70-85) (Hartley) (S1). Further excavations by G Burroughes in the same ditch have produced grey wares, flagon fragments, colour coated wares, decorated and plain samian including a stamped piece; also found were furnace (?) fragments including 2 triangular lug handles (?) and slag (? iron). A bronze bird-shaped 'cosmetic palette' was also found. Sherds of a belgic butt beaker and double cordon bowl were found nearby as were some clay mould fragments (S2). Small excavation in the area of mould fragments surface finds produced a large number of further fragments and a few traces of bronze waste in the top of a small feature (S3).
Basil Brown visited Glebe Field in May 1961 with Gilbert Burroughes. He noticed some large stones at base of excavation trench and when cleared, these revealed 2 circular or star-shaped areas of stones, together with pottery sherds and the larger part of a Rom vessel burnt red. Sketch in archive of position of stones in trench - he thought possibly a pottery making site.
33 Rom grey ware sherds from this site are in archive (S5).
For half a 'Claudian romanising Belgic' bowl from this site (formerly mislocated) see CHD 020.
