Monument record THS 003 - Skeleton or Black Plantation

Collared urn found pre 1870 and presented to Moyses Hall by Reverend C W Jones in 1870. 28cm high, short convex collar with decoration of three horizontal lines of twisted cord impression. Below collar decorated with small circular impressions, also on flattened rim. Internal bevel decorated with panels of twisted cord and small circular impressions. Smooth, yellowish- brown (S1).
This pot is part of the Trigg Collection and was accompanied by a large quantity of calcined bone. Basil Brown states that the plantation was originally rectangular in shape and little more than 1/4 acre in extent and contained a small pit, according to local residents in 1951. "Skeleton" is a relatively recent name and "Black" the original name is said to have referred to the colour of the trees that grew there (S2).
Edwardson marks findspot at TL 9260 6620 in pit at edge of track & notates "Two Bronze Age cinerary urns in 1870, F43 and F44" (S3).
