Full Description

Anglo Saxon inhumation cemetery, found in 1849 by men raising ballast. Circa 100 burials, one in stone coffin (S1).
Although the site and discoveries are described by Tymms (S1) no organised excavations took place and no accurate location is given. The actual site of the cemetery appears to be (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) in West (S2)), within an area of approximately two acres 'turned over' in the exploitation of gravel, to the rear of Wideham Cottages. Some confusion has occurred over this siting - see WSW 001 Sax (S2).
Many finds, for complete known list see West (S2).
Also silver type D bracteate (S1; M. Axboe, Acta Archaeologica, 1982, 74f, Nr 307b, Taf VIII; J Hines 1984, 215; Ikonographischer Katalog 1-3, 1985-9, Nr 293).
For associated settlement see WSW 002 Sax.
Also BA.
N.B. See Arttype for full list of artefacts.
