Full Description

Mr Warren exhibited at the quarterly meeting of SIA on June 5, 1851, "a large bronze fibula, of the Saxon period, found at Ixworth" (S1).
Probably same as cruciform brooch in Birmingham Museum - 12.7cm long, 6.7cm wide with perforated lappets and foot. Left hand knob of head-plate cut flat in antiquity - possible attempt to repair mis-cast. Said to have been found on the shoulders of a skeleton in the Ixworth inhumation T G Barnett collections (no. XCII). Sold at Sotheby sale, November 1927, lot 183 (S2). Most, however, of Warrens collection passed to the Evans collection and then to the Ashmolean, Oxford.

Formerly recorded as IXW MISC
